Stiffing Stevens, Guarding Gonzales?

Today is an amazing day.

First, let’s set the stage: The blogosphere is abuzz with news of Senator Stevens’ house raidthe longest serving Republican senator in history – and reactions to Ruth Marcus’ story (also in the Washington Post) about AG Gonzales and how he might not have committed perjury, yes the one who no one will defend – not even on Sunday shows.

Now the cast (courtesy of Memeorandum): Those talking about Sen. Stevens and his raid to name a few: Firedoglake, Captain’s Quarters, Carpetbagger Report, RCP, Swampland, Red State, Wonkette, eyeon08, Michelle Malkin, TPMmuckraker just to name a few. Now those out there jumping to the Gonzales defense: Powerline, PrairiePundit, The Volokh Conspiracy, Dick Cheney, and Captain’s Quarters from just a quick glance. Also of note, the Anonymous Liberal has great coverage of the Gonzales case.

Now here’s what I don’t get: We have the longest serving GOP Senator – master of serving up the pork for friends – on one hand, and on the other we have the lawyer for Bush, who Sen. Specter is probably about to jump, that Republicans are abandoning and yet who are the wingnuts coming to the rescue of? Who are they jumping to conclusions about? Wow. Where does working in public service since 1964 get you? Not to innocent until proven guilty amongst the righties, I guess. And where does refusing to answer Sen. Schumer’s questions get you? Apparently, at least a column in the Post and a decent defense wingnutosphere.
