icanhascheezburger icannotmockreligion?

No – I don’t think icanhascheezburger is actually knocking religion (and truthfully I love the site) but they had to take this picture down from their front page due to complaints:

funny pictures
moar funny pictures

They actually had to close the comments, which were nearing 500, because: “From Cheezburger: I’m closing teh comments cause the page is getting to big to load and causin’ problems in sum browsers.”

Personally, I don’t think they meant to be offensive, but wow – icanhascheezburger was forced to take something down, what is this world coming too? If anything kitekat cat food should probably have thought more about its ad placement.

But in the end, “Egads! Sum ppl. says dis is offensive, sum sez iz just lolz,” I say its a website about funny pet pictures that wasn’t being offensive until someone said they were. Now wherz mah buhket? Thougtz?

I would have to say that it wasn’t so much the picture that was offensive (although it was in a “What? Is that a real billboard? No? Someone actually made that in photo shop? Oh, not good.” sort of way) but I feel the caption itself was the most offensive.

It would be like, say, my parent pushed me out of the way of a moving bus to save my life and then he got killed by the bus. Then some guy thought the photo of him pushing me out of the way was funny and found a picture of some animal and superimposed it in a similar photo and said, “This animal saved your life but got all squashed and bloody.” I would be offended not only at the photo, but it would take a back seat to the insult of the caption.

Christians consider the propitiatory sacrifice of Jesus’ life on the cross a most sacred part of our lives and someone who doesn’t follow this belief may not realize they are being insulting when they make light of it… Christ’s death on the cross is to us a very serious and wonderful thing. It alone is the pivotal point which restores our relationship with God… so we take it pretty seriously.

Would they have been able to put a picture up of some other historical religious figure and a cat and get away with it? Maybe. Maybe not for some “unnamed” religion we won’t mention here who’s adherents like to retaliate vehemently… But I guess it is okay to poke a little fun at Christians because we’re just so darn forgiving and peaceful.

(Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do…)

Why is it that all the religious folks out there expect everyone else that doesn’t share their beliefs to walk on eggshells.
So the Association of Man/Boy love offends me- but guess what- I don’t go there.
I know that it exists, but I have the option of not going there.
I think that it is time that we stop coddling the feelings of nervous religious folk.

We walk through life every single day disagreeing with issues that bother us- that is life, you have options, and the free will to explore them.
Censorship is a pretty rotten option.

  6. Sean Says:

Yes, censorship is unamerican and uncivilized. Just consider these stupid jokes that offend you to be another test of your faith, and move on.

Stop expecting the whole world to share your belief in superstition and fairy tales.

  7. fubis Says:

You have got to be kidding me.
Christianity has turned into the WHINEST religion in the world… A freakin harmless pic, that is FUNNY, must be taken down because it offends you…

If your religion is so fraglie that something like this hurts it, then you are a sad individual.

And seriously, look at his comparison up there… A person being pushed into a bus? Are you kidding?! A person you cannot prove existed in the capacity that you believe he existed being compared to someone who you saw physically die saving your life…

You are a nutball. Pure and simple. Censoring this because it “Hurts your feelings”. Your fragile, on again/off again as you see fit religion was pinged and nearly broken by a picture of a cat captioned in a humorous situation.

I think your Father needs to forgive you for your LACK of faith. That it would be hurt by such a thing is a far graver sin than the thing itself.

  8. meagen Says:

i think we all need to calm down and live a little. quit being little tight asses about everything and let everyone else who are not christians… have a little damn fun.. it’s not like their hurting you.. well not physically hurting you anyways… suck it the fuck up!!!!

  9. Rachel Says:

WOW, all this over a cat picture. Number one it needs to be said, icanhascheezebuger doesnt come up with these captions on their own. The people who submit the photos and other users make these up. For all anyone knows a devout christian made it up. ALSO i am a christian and i dont really care for being steamrolled by those who assume we are allllll alike. We arent by the way. Im not saying their arent some crazies out there. There are PLENTY of them. But please dont lump us all together. If you dont believe in God thats fine, i dont stand in judgement for you . Thats for you to deal with not me. So please dont judge me and call my beliefs crap, otherwise your being just like all the christians you complain about now arent you? and by the way i dont find the comment on the picture offensive. Its not a big deal.

  10. Kelsey! Oh hai! Says:

Can anyone tell me where to find a close-up of the cyrillic on the billboard? I’d like a translation, but all I can manage is Boreeca, which means something of Boris’s. So… I really think everyone’s being whiny about it, no matter which side, but I’d just like a close-up of it so I can laugh harder.

    That’s right.

    Harder.

  11. The Reformed Faith Weblog Says:

Okay guys – all I was doing was explaining WHY the photo might be construed as offensive. I never said to censor it. I thought the explanation was an effort to broker some understanding about how we feel about this particular subject, and never suggested that it be censored. This IS still a free country (even if something you do IS offensive)… so I guess I’m really not the one who need to chill, now am I? So post whatever you like… I just commented on it because someone asked “why is this offensive to some people?” (not an exact quote but that was the gist of it.)

It’s amazing how much tolerance is demanded of us but how often it is not offered to us.

  12. SweetMOM Says:

At any rate, thanks for posting the image so we can *gasp* decide for ourselves!

  13. ur offenz is my smilz Says:

If you’re offended by it don’t look and keep your f*ckin comments to yourselves you bunch of sissies.

  14. ando Says:

I’m a Christian, and I’ve always thought if you can’t laugh at your own religion, you are taking things way too seriously to be able to relate to non-christians!

  15. WithdrawalFX Says:

I loved it. well placed board, bound to be noticed by a lot of people. And since any publicity is good publicity a very good advertising move.

The caption was spot on, it cracked me up.

And personally I’d be more offended by the building sized picture of Jezus than by the cat because it would feel like others are pushing their religion on me.

imo, religion should be between the person and their god (if they choose to believe in him/her/them/it) and kept to themselves.
